An exceptional work by the French master Alfred Philippe Roll (1846–1919), a leading figure of Naturalism whose works are displayed today in prestigious museums such as the Petit Palais in Paris.

In this sensitive study, Roll demonstrates his brilliant mastery of color. The deep, almost electric sky-blue tone of the background creates a dramatic and vivid contrast against the warm skin tones. It is this interplay between warm and cool hues that makes the subject vibrate, lending the piece a modern, timeless quality. Like many great masters of the era, Roll employed pastel to capture light and atmosphere with an immediacy that oil paint could not offer.

The work is housed in a heavy, antique gilt frame that beautifully complements the warm tones of the pastel. The frame bears evident signs of age, with some loss of moulding in the corners – a detail we have chosen to preserve as it lends the object its unique patina and soul.
